This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at an elementary school in the heart of a large city in Florida. My school is located in a community that has a majority of ELL students and parents. This is a Title I school with limited resources and all our students receive free breakfast and most receive free or reduced-priced lunch.
We are a fourth grade Special Education classroom that is part of the Autism Academy and most of our students are visual and tactile learners.
Our classroom has eight students with Autism, ADD/ADHD, sensory deficits, multiple disabilities, behavior deficits and speech and language impairments. Even with their disabilities, my students are smart, sweet and caring. They are excited to come to school daily. They love to read and work on projects. Our class is filled with diverse learners with a variety of different needs and learning styles.
We need your help to provide our classroom with books that will encourage the love for reading.
My Project
My students love to read. Some read more fluently than others and they all look forward to our daily read alouds. They will sit patiently and listen attentively as I read these stories.
These lovely books will help my students identify characters that they can relate to.
These books will also help them to identify their feelings and will teach them how to communicate how they are feeling.
They are learning to make different connections to stories they hear and read. Examples of the connections they make are text to text , text to self and text to world. These stories by Patricia Polacco are so engaging and they make it easy for them to visualize and make these connections.
