My students need ukuleles to provide a hands on option to learn a musical instrument. We have also adopted a new online curriculum that includes a ukulele unit, and learning ukulele increases community performance opportunities.
I teach in a low-income area where resources are limited. This poses many challenges for students both in school and in the community. As a result, student morale is very low. Many students have no idea what their future holds or even what kind of career opportunities could be available to them after high school.
I see so much potential in many of my students, and it is my goal as a teacher for them to learn a musical skill that also helps them to cultivate a positive self-image.
Students get excited about the arts. When given the opportunity to express themselves visually or musically, they can learn to take pride in their accomplishments as they seek to achieve a common goal.
My Project
Many of my music students express a desire to learn a musical instrument. I want to give my students the opportunity to play a musical instrument that is simple enough for them to accompany a song they know. This leads not only to a sense of accomplishment when they play a song, but also builds confidence and character.
Ukuleles provide the opportunity for students to share this sense of accomplishment with their community through performance.
Regular performance opportunities motivate students to work to their full potential on their instruments. Thanks to the adoption of our new ukulele-friendly online music curriculum, we can combine technology with playing an instrument for optimum student engagement.
