My students need two tubano drums to help replace the ones that are falling apart from age that have no replacement parts. These drums are adjustable and more durable.
Our general music program prides itself in being diversified to meet the needs of our student population. The students and I always strive for making each lesson a truly tuneful, beatful, artful, and a joyful experience.
Every day we make learning target goals and aim to achieve excellence in our behavior and academics.
With a community that heavily supports music in a physical presence but is low socioeconomically, the ability to purchase music classroom materials can sometimes be a challenge. Every child deserves to have a quality music education, and in this instance this project will help us achieve that for the general music program for years to come. Currently we are in the process of updating our musical instruments with curriculum that aligns to our Washington State Music Standards for grades K-6. Students in grades K-3 study music within the context of the First Steps in Music series by John Feierabend. In grades 4-5 we study from a Spokane Symphony curriculum that uses percussion, singing, and recorder to learn music literacy. In 6th grade we study from various world music publications that expose students to a variety of cultural music vocally and instrumentally.
My Project
I am requesting two tubano drums to help replace the ones that are falling apart from age that have no replacement parts.
Students start playing tubano drums as early as kindergarten in our general music program. Students in the younger elementary grades work on alternating hand coordination, recognizing high and low sounds, and playing simple rhythmic patterns while singing. In 4th-6th grade, students have the opportunity to explore world music drumming with their classes, and try out for advanced ensembles that meet before school and during recess. In preparation for middle school, students use a variety of drums as accompaniments to choral music and to achieve state grade level expectations in steady-beat and rhythm, pitch, form, expression, and technique when it comes to playing music instrumentally.
Students need to be engaged in a variety of learning styles to retain the skills and knowledge taught to them.
This will assist students at achieving how to read, listen, see, discuss, experience, and teach others about the joys of creating music. In addition, these instruments will replace our older tubano drums that are beginning to lose their rubber balance stoppers, which creates some challenges when learning correct hand drumming posture with students.
