Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Dr. Seuss' quote, "Oh the places you'll go!," best exemplifies the adventure that I take my students on everyday. My 10th graders begin the year with little or no foundation in social studies. Interactive notebooks are an incredible scaffolding tool that makes learning efficient, organized, and fun!
My students face challenges on a daily basis.
Generally speaking, my students are low-income, minorities, who may be the first to graduate high school in their family or are first generation Americans. For most of my students, English is not their first language. Even though some may label their school as students that are a "challenging demographic," I believe they represent the hope, future, and the potential of the "American dream." These students value education, want to realize their potential, and are simply waiting for teachers to provide the tools necessary to succeed. My students rise to the high expectations that I set before them. They are scholars! My students are eager to learn and incredibly appreciative of the opportunities that are before them because they realize that knowledge is power.
My Project
The glues sticks that are needed can really be described as an EMPOWERMENT TOOL. The interactive notebooks include students' vocabulary, notes, quick writes, graphic organizers, readings, maps, political cartoons, reflections of experientials, and so much more. Students use the glue sticks to paste their hand-outs, readings, primary sources, maps, and graphic organizers into their notebooks. This allows my students to interact with the learning by analyzing history directly in their notebooks. I see students who think they are "not smart" share their opinions from their quick writes, read their summaries after taking notes in front of the class, and apply their academic vocabulary on a daily basis. At the end of the year, my students will be amazed at their knowledge in world history and their notebook then becomes a portfolio of their learning and progress throughout the year. In this way, I know that glue stick is the empowerment tool to ensure that ALL students can learn.
Without the glue sticks, my students would lack organization that is essential in learning to become a successful student and providing access to making history come "alive." The notebook becomes a means of communication between the student and I, and between the student and their family.
And lastly, the notebooks become a tool for success when it comes down to state-testing time. My test scores would support the idea that "a little (glue stick) goes a long way."
