We have significant numbers of children that are first-generation Americans, from many parts of the globe; there are 29 languages currently spoken at our school. Roughly 20% of our students are from homes where English is a secondary language spoken at home. Nearly 80% of the students at my school qualify for the federal free and reduced-price lunch program, and 57% of our children are ethnic minorities. Roughly 30% of the student body participates in our ELL program.
With this project, I seek to connect music with student growth, positively.
I see the need to improve the enjoyment, creativity, exploration, and overall success of my students. I notice that hands-on learning is crucial for positive engagement and my students deserve a great experience in music.
We have significant numbers of children that participate in enrichment music groups before, during, after school. Supporting this project enhances the connection and offerings at my school, connecting with our students. These resources provide essential classroom materials that are needed for student engagement.
My Project
This project will support purchasing tubano hand drums for an extremely diverse group of children. I will be using these drums with music resources like "World Music Drumming" by Will Schmid. This type of instruction focuses on teaching in a drum circle, an extremely engaging music experience. By supporting the purchase of these drums, each child will have access to their own musical instrument in the circle. The curriculum teaches different drumming patterns that can be played alone, as an accompaniment, and along with countless styles of music. With your support, my classroom will have a greater connection to their musical heritage through this instrument curriculum. These tubanos are durable and high-quality instruments, typically seen in elementary schools across the United States. Another great component of this project is that two organizations will provide matching funds for each donation.
