Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
To see a smile on a child's face is the most gratifying sight there is! I experience this feeling every day at work. I teach music to 500 students, pre-k - grade 5. My work is inspiring, and I know I am making a difference. This project will let my students see the world through the beauty of music.
My school is located in a mid-size urban area.
Almost 50% of the students are eligible for free/reduced lunch. The population includes a variety of cultures from Africa and Latin America. Within our city and district, our school is considered high poverty, and thus receives Title 1 funds. Additionally, our demographics are rapidly shifting towards increased minority status and increased numbers of English Language Learners. The multicultural student body has a deep desire and eagerness to embrace music and different cultures from around the globe. Funding this project will allow me to facilitate this learning process.
My Project
With these drums, my children will be able to learn about world cultures, their own and others. With this knowledge, I hope to instill high self esteem and pride in their native cultures, as well as a love and appreciation for all kinds of music. The drums in the project are from a variety of countries. Bongos, djembe, and gathering drum are from Africa. Conga is from Latin America, and the doumbek is from the Middle East. For my younger students, I look to explore drumming, and introduce them to music from around the world. For my older students, I envision teaching world drumming techniques, and studying music from their native lands, culminating in a community performance. Children learn the best with hands on, personally meaningful activities. What better way to have a hands on learning experience than with drums?
I strongly believe that the arts play an integral role in our children’s education.
This project will allow for collaborative, interdisciplinary study, which is the best kind of learning for our children. Through world drumming, I believe I can give my kids a chance to learn a significant lesson that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. To see a smile on a child's face is the most gratifying sight there is!
