Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you've ever seen a crazy soccer fan than you know just how exciting the game of soccer is. I want my students to experience the same type of fever.
Our students, from an inner city Kindergarten through 5th grade charter school, are intelligent, energetic, and extremely enthusiastic.
They love to move and have a great time playing all types of activities. The school is 90% latino and has great spirit. Coming from the inner city, there are less open parks and thus, fewer opportunities to play in recreational sports where they would thrive in many aspects. The main challenge our students face in these endeavors is the fact that our charter school is without a gym. I, as the Health and P.E. teacher, am forced to take them to the nearby park 2 blocks away for any type of vigorous activities. This has obvious downsides including rain, availability, community safety, vandalism, etc.
My Project
All around the world we see children from the poorest of environments rise from the depths through the sport of soccer. Looking into some of these children's background we see that at times the only materials they had were a ball of rags and 2 stones for a goal.
Soccer is a sport that can improve many lives and change them altogether. Through hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship, soccer offers many lessons that students of any age can carry with them the rest of their lives.
The basic equipment that would help to orchestrate an after school soccer team for these elementary students can help them in so many ways. Not only from the concepts of physical health, but social as well. And we can never forget the amazing effects of keeping kids constructively busy. The idea that the longer they spend in a positive atmosphere after school rather than some of the more negative atmospheres more commonly found in inner cities is always a plus.
I look at the energy and spirit of so many of my students and I never want it to stop.
I want that innocence that comes out in every type of "play" to continue throughout their childhood and if an after school soccer program can help than I'll run a thousand of them.
