I have been teaching first grade in the South Bronx for the past three years. If there is anything I have noticed about six year olds, they are very interested in justice, or, to be more accurate, they are very aware when something is not fair for them personally or for them as a class!
This passion for fairness might be the reason why every single year, my students become so excited when we study the people I like to call World Changers or Rule Breakers. (Don't all children love to learn about times when breaking the rules turns out to be a good thing!)
As all of my children are Hispanic or African American, I especially want to fill my library with books about great Hispanic and African American leaders.
I also need books about people, especially women, from all different races who have made a positive difference in the world.
Please help me fill up my library with books about people who have made a difference such as Fridah Kahlo, Rosa Parks, Sojourner Truth, Rachel Carson... and others.
I know how inspiring great people are to my students. We already know all about Martin Luther King, Jr. and Cesar Chavez, to name two but we want to know more. I need more books about these phenomenal individuals and others to encourage my students to also become world changers.
My future world changers now and in the future will benefit from this rich classroom resource (and so might the whole world!)
