Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a math teacher at a Bronx H.S. where over 85% of the students are eligible for free lunch. My aim is to improve interdisciplinary links between math and literacy by introducing the students to some age appropriate writings with a mathematical perspective. The goal is to encourage students to think of math in terms other than "algebra" and at the same time tie literacy activities to subjects other than pure language arts. I need to get this started by providing students with books. I need 40 copies of Journey through Genius by William Dunham which is a classic compilation of great math proofs and the stories behind them. This book is old enough that (I believe) they are in public domain, and so are relatively inexpensive to provide each student with his/her own copies. Through this project I hope to support the education drive relating literacy skills to all subject areas.
