My students are always the first set of smiles that I see walking towards me and are always eager to get to school in the morning. They come in with the willingness to work hard and an enthusiasm for learning.
School should not just be a place for my students to learn about academics, but to learn about themselves.
I work in a school that has a high level of poverty. Eighty five percent of the students in my school receive free or reduced price breakfast/lunch. Most of my students come from a background of trauma and require not only academic support, but social and emotional support throughout the day. My goal is to make their school experience meaningful and fun while also setting high expectations for all of my students.
I want to prepare them for the next steps in their lives and also teach them that anything is possible if they set their mind to it and work hard!
My Project
During our reader's workshop time, all of my students have the opportunity to go to literacy centers where they can choose an activity to complete with a partner or alone. These activities help to increase their skills in reading, writing, and spelling/word recognition.
Their time spent working with hands on materials is especially valuable to their retention of spelling and high frequency words.
Through collaboration with peers I have learned about so many new activities that I would like to add to our literacy centers to increase my students engagement and give them more choices during our reader's workshop. The materials I am asking for will help me to create these additional centers.
The centers include things like stamping out spelling words with rubber stamps and stamp pads, writing high frequency words on magnadoodle boards, dice to allow them to roll a number (with corresponding color) to write their weekly words, and laminating activities so that my students will be able to write and erase their words without having to use another sheet of paper.
With the use of these activities my students will be able to increase their engagement during our reader's workshop time and select different ways to practice their word work during our center time.
