Welcome to Mrs. Elder's classroom! I have 10 wonderful, thoughtful, and creative students with special needs. Daily, my students come to school to work on meeting their individualized education plan (IEP) academic, social/behavioral, adaptive, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and/or physical therapy goals. Examples of IEP goals include identifying numbers or letters, copying a sentence, taking turns, hand washing, producing letter sounds, grasping a pencil, and walking downstairs with minimal assistance.
With your support these students can be afforded opportunities they greatly need in order to achieve high academic and social expectations.
My Project
Most of my students receive occupational therapy to develop their fine motor skills, gross motor skills and motor planning. At most, my students receive 1 hour of occupational therapy per week out of their 35 hour school week. During their time with the occupational therapist, my students are working on handwriting skills, practicing eye coordination, and/or learning basic self-care tasks (getting dressed, feeding).
With your support, my students will have access to fine motor and motor planing activities daily.
Fine motor and motor planning skills are essential for learning and playing at school. It is my goal to give my students additional opportunities to develop their fine motor and motor planning skills in my classroom.
The magnetic board, magnetic color maze, and gum ball grab, will help my students strengthening their writing grips. The linking cubes, math links and peg board, will help my students practice problem solving, pushing objects together, and pulling objects apart. The dressing frames will help my students practice dressing skills and develop finger dexterity.
