Working Wiggles Out, While Grounding Yourself at the Same Time
My students need the opportunity to stand and move while working. The X-Elite Standing Desk will provide them with the ability to convert a regular student desk into a standing desk and back again as needed.
My program is a Learning Center serving students with mild to moderate disabilities in grades 5-8. We serve a wide array of students whose eligibilities range from Intellectual Disability, Specific Learning Disabilities, Speech-Language Impaired, Other Health Impaired, and Emotional Disturbance and work closely with a team of specialists (Nurse, Occupational Therapist, Speech-Language Therapist, Behaviorist, Counselors and Paraprofessionals) as well as our general education teachers/administrators to ensure that our students receive support in all areas of need (academic, emotional and social).
While all of my students have the intellectual curiosity and capabilities to succeed with their assigned work tasks, many of them struggle to sustain their attention and the level of engagement required in one sitting for the length of time necessary to complete these assignments.
Having the ability to stand and move about the classroom allows them to receive the sensory feedback they often require in order to apply themselves to their work successfully.
My Project
Did you know that furniture can be the thing that limits teachers and students the most when attempting to teach or learn? In reality, the ability to work to one's potential often relies on physical factors more than most will admit. In my classroom, our desks limit my students' abilities to connect with and engage in their learning by forcing them to sit passively.
The addition of an adjustable Standing Desk platform will allow my students to adapt their workspace to meet their bodies needs when attempting to concentrate, grounding their efforts to remain focused and produce work.
In addition, a Standing Desk platform will provide the ability to adjust the height of their work surface, which will allow a group of students to stand together and increase their ability to collaborate on projects. Currently, even with access to portable Chromebooks in my classroom, students are stuck working at "old school" desk configurations. The option to stand would positively alter the dynamics in the classroom.
