Working Toward Stronger Mathematical and Fine-Motor Skills

My Project

I work in a small district in Southern Washington. Our school has about 230 students from pre-k to 12th grade. Ours is a low-income area. Many families struggle to assist their children with academics and fine motor skills. Too often, parents and guardians are unable to support what is being taught at school. My students need a variety of tools to improve their mathematical abilities. Additionally, many of my students lack solid fine-motor skills. Again, these skills are rarely directly practiced at home.

Struggling readers will benefit mathematically as they engage in storybooks that teach mathematical skills.

When I read aloud, my students become engaged in the topic. I believe that the combination of listening to me read about mathematical concepts, then discussing the skills will benefit all my students.

Many of my children lack hand strength and have little experience controlling a medium such as watercolor. These two weaknesses combined with following specific directions, are improved when we paint. Watercolor requires patience. Here are three skills that benefit when handling brushes and beautiful colors.
