My students need a Kalokids Vari Seat to engage in buddy reading while also providing a comfortable spot to take a mental break when frustrated or stressed. We also would like 4 Multi-Fold Padded Seats.
I love working with my students. We are a richly diverse learner population, with a large range of skills. I work with our Special Education and ESOL teams to help teach students with a broad range of academic skills: from learning disabilities, to attention/focus concerns, to organizational challenges, to developing language skills, to the ability to access advanced academics. My classroom is a wonderful mix of students from very diverse cultures. Being in a very populated area, we have families in our area from all over the U.S. as well as the world.
One thing I love most about my class is all of the ways they teach each other about their different cultures.
The diversity in our population allows the students and teachers to understand different perspectives. These various viewpoints help to shape not only our curricular discussions, but also teaches us tolerance and empathy toward others. Even though my students must also learn a second language or face learning disabilities, they approach their learning with excitement and high energy. I am always excited to help provide these students with the tools they need for success in learning.
My Project
Our classroom is hoping to improve our flexible seating options to better allow partnered students to read to each other or to discuss books. The Vari Seat will allow two students to sit together and buddy read during Language Arts, or to collaborate on a project. This "mini-sofa" is perfect for two students, and portable enough to move when needed. It will also fold away when the entire class joins me on the carpet. The folding chairs will also allow a small group to gather in different areas of the room to discuss projects, reading groups, or instructional concepts. Working in small groups helps to build the necessary communication skills students need for future success.
Flexible seating helps create a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere in the classroom which promotes engagement and encourages students to collaborate.
By providing flexible seating in the classroom, the students suddenly have various places to complete tasks. When a classroom allows for some student choice, then the learning become more student-centered. Our class is very excited about improving our seating options for paired and group work.
