My students come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Some of my Pre-K students come to me with a wealth of experiences such as daycare and camps. For others, this is their first experience away from home, and they are a bit wary of all the new friends who surround them daily. Our school is a Title I school, and we have 90% give or take at the poverty level. As you can imagine, this has a big impact on the experiences that our students have prior to coming to us.
Taking all of these facts into account, it is my job and privilege to expose these young learners to as many positive social and academic experiences as possible while they are a part of our school community.
My Project
I would like to have a dollhouse to incorporate into my pretend work area. I currently keep my large pretend area up as house all year long because the students enjoy it so much and I also learn lots about their language abilities, grammar usage skills when communicating, individual coping styles, family dynamics, and socialization levels.
Incorporating this dollhouse will allow me to keep the "playing house" learning activity continuing on a smaller scale, while I am able to create theme-related activities in my larger pretend center.
I am looking forward to bringing restaurants, doctor's offices, farmer's markets, etc. into my larger pretend center area. With your help, I can provide my students with both of these learning situations without sacrificing one for the other.
