Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My third grade students and I are very interested in what is going on in the world around us. The solar system is one of our favorite topics, and my students love to learn about the planets and outer space. My students are working smarter, together on the solar system!

Our Ferguson, MO, school is quite unique.

We are a small school, focused on educating the whole child. Creating responsible citizens is one of our main goals. Subjects that incorporate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) occur daily in our lessons.

My Project

Having these hands-on solar system materials would afford my third graders the chance to go beyond their textbook to explore and discover new ideas and facts regarding our universe. The Orbiter will be used to model how the Earth orbits our Sun. The Earth Model will allow the class to learn about what is inside the earth, while the Activity Tubs will provide hands-on exploration and experimentation of our solar system. The wonderful libraries contain colorful and interesting books about the planets, and The Magic School Bus series will help my struggling readers enjoy reading about the planets with a read-along CD. We will also have an educational blast playing the games and learning from the colorful posters. My students will be able to answer many scientific questions, including, "Which object is the center of the solar system?", "Does the earth revolve or rotate around the sun?", and "What keeps planets in their orbit?"

Donating will help my class better understand the solar system, as well as gain a deeper appreciation for our planet.

They will learn science in a fun, engaging way. Watch for my little astronauts coming your way around the year 2035!
