Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Middle school is an exciting time filled with dramatic changes. Navigating social pressures, fine-tuning academic skills and addressing physical changes can be overwhelming for adolescents even in the best of times. Our school family has more than 1300 6th, 7th and 8th graders and includes a diverse group of learners from all walks of life. Currently, there is one school counselor in our building for every 435 kids.
We are determined to help each and every student develop the social skills and knowledge they deserve for a successful future.
Groups are a fantastic way to allow a small team like ours to meet the many different personal, social and academic needs for a large student population. Group counseling can help reduce social isolation and negative emotions, as well as increase positive peer relations and a sense of belonging.
My Project
Group counseling allows students to access the support they need at school efficiently and effectively. Additionally, receiving services with a group means students are not isolated and can even help them to develop a healthy peer support network and make choices that work best for them. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them to learn. We have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given the chance to process their struggles safely with their peers.
Students learn and are more engaged in their work when their basic physical and mental health needs are met.
The products that I have selected will help my students by providing resources to make a variety of effective group counseling options available. The space our students have right now is a bit unfortunate due to the cinderblock walls and lack of windows. We are hoping to use the mural and multifunctional furniture to create a welcoming space that invites students in. A small refrigerator filled with bottled water and snacks will allow us to meet our students' basic needs while simultaneously closing academic, personal and social gaps.
