My students need 12 subscriptions to Storyworks magazine to read exciting, complex texts with rigorous support materials to build their literacy skills.
My 4th and 5th grade special education students are enthusiastic children who are eager to learn. Many receive free or reduced price lunch at our Title I school in New York City.
Many of the students in my class are former or current English language learners, as well as, students with disabilities.
I teach a 12:1:1 bridged 4th and 5th grade class. Reading is a challenging subject for many of them. It is heartbreaking to watch their faces fall when they struggle with reading. Reading should be an enjoyable experience. Storyworks will provide them with engaging and interesting stories that they will enjoy while enhancing their higher-level thinking skills demanded by Common Core state standards. We need StoryWorks magazine to make reading enjoyable again and headphones to listen to the stories online.
My Project
By having Storyworks magazine for each of my students, they will be able to enjoy exciting new texts that are engaging and fun. In order to foster a love for reading children must be able to comprehend the text that they are reading. Reading comprehension allows the reader to interact with the text and have a meaningful experience with literature. Research has shown that comprehension is enhanced when students read stories they are interested in. Storyworks provides readers with the opportunities to read articles and stories that are enjoyable as well as educational. We will use this magazine as supporting texts to reinforce the most important reading and language arts concepts, including main ideas, supporting details, cause/effect, paragraph writing, grammar, and many more. Storyworks has informational, fiction, paired texts, poetry, debates, and more! Along with activities to help enhance students literacy skills to help them meet the rigorous common core state standards.
Children need texts that are educational, as well as, engaging.
In order to promote reading in school and outside of school we need to foster a love of reading in each of our students.
Your contribution and generosity is so very much appreciated! We will be sure to make the most of this magazine in our instruction so that our students benefit in countless ways from your generosity. You are helping foster a love for reading, which is the greatest gift of all! Thank you so much in advance!
