My classroom is comprised of students with severe deficits in their language skills and communication as well functional delays. There are a variety of disabilities from orthopedic impairment to Autism to intellectual disabilities. My students are functionally non-verbal and need signification assistance with toileting, eating, and navigating the classroom. They require a schedule using pictures to make their navigation through the classroom a success. We are working on using pictures and schedules to make them more independent through the school day.
My students do not have many independent skills. Structured work tasks are a research based strategy for students with Autism that can provide students with systematic instruction that helps them become independent at school and at home. Work tasks will be put into the boxes that students can use the picture schedule to complete. During center rotations, students will come to the marked area of the room and utilize the boxes. They will follow a picture schedule to see what task comes next and when their boxes are done, they will receive a reward.
By giving my students tasks clearly organized in workboxes with picture support, they can be independent which will help them with centers within the classroom as well as daily living and life skills.
Using this research based methodology will help them with classroom skills and hopefully carry over to their daily living skills like toileting, brushing teeth, washing dishes, etc.
