My students need basic supplies, such as Expo dry erase markers, crayons, erasers, pencil pouches, and clipboards to effectively complete their assignments.
We are an integrated collaborative teaching (ICT) first-grade class, with a mixture of general and special education students at a high-needs, Title I school in the Bronx. While the majority of students come from low-income homes or from homes with limited parental involvement, they are enthusiastic and come to school every day ready to learn. They see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and love to make me proud.
My first graders are some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with, and they inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.
My Project
Flexible seating has proven to be an effective method in our first grade inclusive classroom. Students are given options to work where they feel suits them. However, we are in need of clipboards so students can comfortably and easily work on their assignments. Also, we are requesting pencil pouches, as well as dry erase markers, erasers, and thick pencils, so students can transport their writing materials easily with them as they work. These pouches will keep their writing instruments together and eliminate the need to get up and retrieve them. We also need crayons for each student. The crayons will be used on a daily basis for students to complete activities, as well as work on OT skills. The requested paper will be used to make copies for students as needed throughout the day. For example, if I see a student struggling with a concept, I can make copies of a supplemental assignment for them to review and reinforce until they understand.
Our class is requesting the Level I Book Bin to accommodate our high-level readers; these students need access to books at their appropriate level, and this bin with the accompanying books will do just that.
I don’t want my students to get bored reading the same books over and over. By providing them with books at their level, I can ensure they are being pushed academically and retain their love for learning.
These materials will make a world of difference for my students. They will be thrilled to continue the work they’re doing!
