Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is full of children that are trying to get the best education possible, while dealing with many issues in their home and social lives. I teach at a Title I school and many of these students come from a less than ideal background. These children are 9 and 10 years old who have been through more hardship than I have in my 32 years of life.
A high percentage of these students are also English Language Learners and have that additional challenge.
They really do their best and have the "yearning for learning", but this is an additional challenge. I am inspired daily how resilient and tenacious the students are in their lives and their education.
My students range in grade level abilities from K-5. Most of the students are in the 2-3 range. I have 7 special need students this year. Some of my fourth graders are so severe that they cannot even write their whole name.
My students struggle with many things. Some social, some academic. I am hoping to be able to use your generous donations to motivate, teach to my best ability, and maintain an atmosphere where the students feel safe and considered.
My Project
Many of my students are struggling in mathematics. I believe that using grid paper takes the focus off of the penmanship of the equation writing, and puts more emphasis on the process and carrying out of what they have learned or are working on in class.
Most of my students are behind by one or more grade levels and are still trying to perfect the skill of lining up place values to carry out equations.
I want to be able to assess if they can do the skill and not necessarily if they are writing it neatly enough. Grid paper relieves the students of worrying about what size to write, or how close together the numbers need to be. This is a tool that can really help my students advance their learning, while still being a review for place value.
