My students need play dough stampers, hole punchers, building blocks, beads and other manipulative materials to help us strengthen our fine motor muscles for writing!
My students are curious and voracious learners. They come to school every day buoyed by a love for learning. Every day, they teach me to look at life and learning in new ways. They are constantly asking "why?" and "what if?" about things I would never have thought about. Their inquisitiveness inspires me to be the best teacher I can be.
I have the privilege of working at a diverse school with students from all walks of life.
We have students from all socio- economic levels; ethnicities and ability levels. My school is a title 1, with Learning Immersion and Gifted and Talented magnet programs. The diversity at our school provides our students with the opportunities to build relationships with and learn from people of all different backgrounds. Through the diversity of our school and classroom, my students are able to construct new understandings of others' cultures and to develop empathy and acceptance of our differences. My students love learning and support one another in ways which promote their dreams. When I look at my students, I have hope for a future in which, diversity is welcomed, accepted and celebrated.
My Project
One of the big differences for students coming to first grade is, we are expected to do A LOT of writing! In order to write for extended periods of time and to form letters correctly, children need to have strong muscles in their fingers, hands and wrists. We build these muscles by engaging in activities that stretch and strengthen these tiny muscles! I am asking for materials which will help my students to gain needed fine motor skills so they can grow as writers.
This project will help my students to build strong fine motor muscles that will support them in becoming better writers!
The play dough stampers and hole punches will give them the opportunity to incorporate both literacy learning and fine motor skills. We will use sandpaper to change the sensory input they receive when writing. The alphabet beads will be used to build finger dexterity, concentration and spelling skills simultaneously!
These materials can be used in many different ways within the classroom. They can be incorporated across the curriculum through activities requiring fine motor skills. As my students use these materials, their muscles will get stronger and they will be able to write for longer periods of time and form letters more easily. In the end, my students have a lot to say and want to become writers like their favorite authors. Help us build their confidence and fine motor skills to become the writers of their dreams!
