My students need phonics, reading comprehension, and math workbooks to better their academic skills and reduce our usage of copy paper, ink, and toner.

With the world steadily becoming more earth-conscious, schools are seeking ways to best reduce, reuse, and recycle. One classroom essential that is difficult to reduce is paper. Utilizing workbooks instead of copying numerous worksheets daily is one way our class plans to reduce our usage of paper.
I teach second grade at a public school in an urban city in Maryland.
My class for the upcoming 2013-2014 school year will consist of 24 students, 13 boys and 11 girls. These students are considered advanced as they are performing above grade-level expectations. I look forward to meeting them in the fall and challenging them to achieve higher academic gains. With advanced learners it is important to have learning materials that are academically stimulating but age appropriate as well. Workbooks are a great way to provide age appropriate learning material and allow my students to track their academic progress as the year progresses.
Currently when my students complete independent assignments it usually requires making copies. This causes us to use several reams of paper a week. It would be more "earth-friendly" to utilize workbooks to complete independent tasks instead of multiple copies of worksheets. Not only would it save me planning time but it would also reduce the amount of ink, toner, and copy paper our school uses by simply eliminating the need for copies for my second graders. The phonics workbooks would also allow my students to work at their own pace and track their academic progress. Instead of assignments and papers being crumbled up in their desks or thrown away, my students' work will be neatly stored in their workbooks. It is nearly impossible to completely rid the need of paper in the classroom, but workbooks would certainly make our consumption of paper more efficient and waste-free.
Please help our class go green, reduce paper consumption, practice our reading and math skills, and make learning more fun by investing in this project.
I look forward to utilizing these materials with my students soon in the fall. We thank you in advance for helping us to be more "earth-friendly"!
