My Students
This year I am teaching special ed resource: pull-out services for Pre-K through 3rd grade students with disabilities that affect their ability to learn at the same rate as their peers. These kiddos are so eager to learn! One of the most important things I can do for my students with disabilities is to simplify the math curriculum.
My students are quite intelligent, and all they need to succeed is a step-by-step approach to math concepts with extra time to think and practice.
These students have to work so hard to meet their grade-level goals, and they so often feel less capable than their peers. When they comprehend the math and perform well, they begin to understand that they are not less capable than others--they just learn differently. And then...they get excited to do math! There's nothing more satisfying than hearing a kid who was struggling say, "I've got this! I'm rockin' it!"
My Project
My students need short, power-packed lessons in small groups outside their classrooms. Things like number sense and place value are building blocks for the rest of math, so when those things are difficult, the challenges keep piling up. I need to provide each student with an approach that works for them and meets them right where they are. But so many of the interventions designed special ed are still too complicated. Plus, many of those programs are boring or confusing. I've been looking for a simple, hands-on intervention that will engage my students so they can grow.
The ETA hand2mind Daily Math Fluency Kit meets my kids where they need the extra help and is simple, clear and engaging!
We will use this math kit with its power-packed math lessons every day. My students will get to work with manipulatives and visuals that break the math down into simple step-by-step processes with activities they will enjoy doing! I have seen how happy my students are when math finally makes sense to them. I've seen their confidence take off when they know that they're going to have more "Ah ha!" experiences by keeping at it! It's amazing to see a child gain the understanding they they aren't less than the others who get it quickly--they're just different!
Believing they can do whatever they put their minds to is a great gift to give these kiddos. That ability to persevere will serve them well for their entire lives! Thank you!
