Work Skills Training Projects for Students With Autism
My students need this practical and helpful pre-vocational kits created by Nasco to improve their vocational skills and help them transition from school to the world of work.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Autism is not a disability, it's a different ability." Students with ASD think in pictures and learn best with hands-on activities. Consequently, they need the wide table so that they have an appropriate space/surface for playing games, assembling puzzles, and other activities with manipulatives.
Our center, which serves post-secondary special education students ages 18-26, is a one-of-a-kind center-based educational facility that has created a continuum of services for students with disabilities to ensure students have access to an age-appropriate learning environment.
We believe that the transition process is best experienced through authentic life training, and real world connections. Students are prepared for the world of work and to become productive citizens with the necessary skills that will increase their quality of life. Students attending the transition center earn a certificate of completion. The goal is to provide students with skill training that will transfer to the real adult world. Consequently, the curriculum focuses on the domains of vocational, daily living, and recreation/leisure skills.
My Project
The work skills kits in this project provide the necessary materials for teaching fundamental pre-vocational and community skills for students with autism. The tasks of sorting, counting, assembly, and packaging are brought to life with engaging tasks in these kits that help students improve their time on task, their fine motor skills, and ability to discriminate between acceptable and unacceptable work performance. These kits are also modifiable and adaptable for students based on their ability levels, so all students can learn from the tasks and improve their skills. Containing easy-to-follow directions for students with autism to follow, these kits will be used in my classroom to teach essential work skills my students need for making the transition from school to work.
Research generally shows that only 6% of students with autism are able to obtain employment; consequently, this project is a vital step forward in implementing a work skills curriculum for students with autism that will make them marketable in the workforce.
All individuals have the right to be contributing members of their community. By learning the essential work skills and tasks presented in this projects, new doors will open for my students, and they will be better prepared to take advantage of work opportunities in their community.
