Ms. Sowin from Brooklyn NY is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need supplies that foster physical activity, including jump ropes, a beach ball, and a pedometer.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Every day, my students arrive to school by 7:30 and are dismissed at 4:30 or later for tutoring. They work hard all day with 2 hours of math, an hour and a half of reading, an hour of science and an hour of history. They love school, but they need more physical activity!
My students are quite possibly the most hard working students in New York.
They have outperformed higher-income New York students in Math and every day are working even harder and harder to make sure their reading levels do the same. They attend an extended day charter school, and know that all this hard work will pay off when they graduate college in 2022.
All of the supplies requested will allow my students to get more physical activity in their long, sedentary days as well as help them practice their teamwork skills. I want my students to take turns using the pedometer to see how many steps they are taking compared to how many steps they should be taking. I want my students to have the chance to see how long they can jump rope for and see if they can beat their time from the day before. I want my students to think of fun, creative ways to make relay races using a deck of cards and the baton sticks. In fact, I want my students to get creative with all of the supplies requested and understand why physical activity is so important for them on a daily basis.
By most definitions, low-income students as a group engage in less physical activity and suffer from poorer health outcomes than the general population.
This project is so important because all of the supplies requested will be used to improve my students' physical health. These supplies will help make my students healthier and happier, which of course they deserve. Ultimately, I want my 6th grade students to graduate from college in 2022, but they need to be healthy and happy to do so.
