This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a brilliant group of amazing scholars. They enjoy coming to school every day and being a part of our Northside school community. You may have seen our school and some of my amazing scholars in the documentary, "Love Them First." Our student population is predominately African American with 88% of the students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
We are a classroom family and love learning together.
Each day, we work on the academics that provide them the skills to be future leaders. The students I teach are attaining the foundation for the rest of their educational path.
I teach in North Minneapolis. Although this part of our city struggles with much poverty and violence, it is also rich with human potential, which shows to me every day in the eyes and smiles of my students. Even though some of them may not have the material goods of students in other areas, they are rich in their zest for learning.
My Project
My students work hard all day, every day to improve their academics. Our Friday Fun toys are outdated and some have moved on (to the garbage). We can really use some new board games and toys for pretend play. Students expressed what they would like to be when they grow up and how they can be valuable members of their community. Several students want to be chefs, vets, and parents. These toys will get much use. As winter approaches and the temperature turns colder, our time is limited to play outside. We can use some new activities for Friday Fun to enjoy during the cold Minnesota winter months and rainy days in the spring.
In class we always say, "We work hard to play hard!" We work hard all week and we celebrate our hard work by having Friday Fun every Friday afternoon.
Students can choose what they would like to play with and just relax and have fun. Sometimes we do game and activity stations where the students get to engage with multiple games. This time is also when students can practice their social and emotional skills, such as sharing, taking turns and practicing patience.
