My Project
I have a fantastic group of special needs students ranging in ages of 17-21 years. These students have persevered and continue to be in good spirit as we navigate these uncertain times. We, as a class, have started a new work-study program at the New York City Parks Department which incorporates academic training and exploring work-related interest in groundskeeping and maintenance work.
We are one of the first work study programs to open up since COVID-19 struck our city so hard.
We don’t have sufficient supplies for the grounds work or our classroom. We received the “bare minimum” to create a classroom and have used whatever materials we could find throughout the building. We have compiled a list of items essential to encourage and enlighten our students to truly experience working in groundskeeping and maintenance!
Our daily maintenance routine includes sweeping and mopping the gymnasium, bathrooms, and the upstairs office areas-brooms, dustpans, mops, and buckets are essential for these tasks; cleaning and disinfecting the tables and chairs, mirrors, and bathrooms throughout the building, spray bottles allow us to work with smaller portions with ease; and debris removal for outside grounds work-grabbers provide an adaptive solution for students with disabilities allowing them to have more control and an easier clean-up by “freeing up” one hand. Lastly, our students must use daily worksheets to self-assess and do work related activity sheets in the classroom and a laminating machine will allow us to protect and reuse various worksheets required on a daily basis.
