My Students

My classroom consists of students with autism, intellectual disabilities, and physical disabilities. Many of my students are learning to follow a visual schedule and to be more independent.

Work box tasks are activities that work on many different skills such as math, reading, and fine motor tasks.

The work systems are designed to help organize the material so that my students know exactly what to do and what is expected. This promotes independence for students with disabilities!

My students enjoy interacting with others and learning to do things independently. Creating these work box tasks will allow my students to work on academic skills while also teaching them to follow a work schedule. This independence will enhance their engagement and promote autonomy. I would like to create a work box task system in my classroom to facilitate teaching my students these important independent life skills!

My Project

Work box tasks promote student independence and give students a sense of autonomy! Work box tasks include a variety of skills including reading, math, and fine motor skills. These work systems provide a degree of structure that helps students with disabilities to understand what is expected to complete tasks. Skills are taught using a left to right format to facilitate pre-reading skills. Students begin learning these systems given direct instruction by the teacher and then over time the work is moved to an independent work station. Visuals are incorporated to teach students to follow a schedule and mark off items as they complete them. My students feel good about their growing independence and learning such an important life skill for their future!
