I teach in a self-contained fifth grade at a small, rural school. This means that I teach all subject areas. Many times as my students are working on assignments they ask about the spelling or meaning of words. I strongly encourage my students to use the dictionary and a thesaurus and find these words on their own. The dictionaries in my classroom are copyright 1977, so needless to say they are very outdated and quite worn! Also, it would be great to have enough for all students when we are working on dictionary skills or writing assignments. Communication skills are very important as my students enter the middle school years. Knowing and using a varied vocabulary is the key to becoming a skilled reader and writer. Having these dictionaries available to all my students would be a wonderful asset to my classroom.
