My students need classroom library books, dictionaries, thesauruses, and a document camera.

A typical day in my classroom is one full of laughter, love, and lots of learning. My students find our classroom to be a safe place to express their interests and unique personalities. I can honestly say that there is never a dull moment in room 223. I learn more from my kids than imaginable.
I am a fifth grade teacher in an inner-city charter school in Detroit, Michigan.
My students come from all different backgrounds and walks of life. Each and every one of my kids has a contagious and vibrant spirit that is extremely evident in their pursuit of learning. You can walk into our classroom at any given point and feel the family that we have created together. My students seek to learn about the world around them and the different opportunities that life may present to them. For many of my students, they have never been outside of the city of Detroit/state of Michigan, so learning has become their connection to the world. There are many different ability levels in our one classroom ranging from 2nd grade to 7th grade, so finding creative ways to reach each individual learner is what I strive to do everyday.
For many of my students, school is the only place they are able to read and have access to books. Many don't have many books at home and aren't able to go to local libraries (there aren't very many in Detroit), so school is where they are exposed to the beauty of reading. Part of your donation will go towards buying age appropriate, interesting, and engaging books to fill our classroom library so my students have as much as exposure to reading as possible. I am also asking for 12 sets of dictionaries and thesauruses to fill our shelves. One of the many objectives I have in my classroom is increasing student vocabulary and widening student knowledge of words. I hope to use these resources to teach students that amazing things that come from the written and spoken word. I have also requested a document camera which I would like to use to project information, classroom resources, math manipulative's, science experiments, and more. This will help further enhance overall student learning.
This project would mean the absolute world to my classroom.
My students are so hungry to learn and to read, that this project would simply change their lives and perspective on giving. Many of my students come from homes where they aren't afforded as many opportunities as I would hope, but my students WANT to learn and have not given up on the pursuit of education. I want to make their 5th grade year one that will change their lives.
