They come from Ukraine, Moldova, Bhutan, Myanmar, Vietnam, Marshall Islands, Egypt, Tanzania, Burundi, Congo, Uganda, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan & more. I get to work with amazing kids from all over the world! Most of my 7th and 8th grade English Learners are either refugees from war-torn countries, or were displaced due to environmental factors like contamination or disappearing islands. Many come from refugee camps and are receiving a formal education for the first time.
Despite traumatic pasts, my students come to school smiling and fiercely determined to learn (or make ME laugh!).
They're resilient, motivated to learn English, and graduate high school. They have goals of attending college, a university or technical programs, owning businesses, and contributing to American society.
I teach Level 1 & 2 English Language Development; they've been in the U.S. for about 0-3 years. Learning English quickly is imperative to their success, but I lack the resources to do so. My school is over 90% free/reduced in the highest poverty zip code in our state, with over 20% English Learners. With major budget cuts in our state, we lack the funds to fully implement our curricula or supplement curricula with accessible materials.
My Project
The correlated level library has six copies of the titles that go with our weekly word sorts from Words Their Way: Word Study in Action with English Learners program. Instead of just practicing word sorts on skills like short vowels or consonant blends, the correlated library would allow students to find words in context and practice the targeted skill. With the opportunity to apply new skills, my students' English would advance more quickly and bring them that much closer to their dream, plans and goals. Their excited to be proficient in English and the Words Their Way library will progress their English to the next level!
