I have two classes, enrolling between seven and eight children per class. Our classroom is designed to use direct instruction for new skills learned. This means, that each lesson taught is individualized for each student. Students work one on one with myself, my paraprofessionals, my speech pathologist and my occupational therapist. Our program focuses on different areas of learning: receptive language (understanding spoken language), expressive language (using spoken or adaptive language), spontaneous language, functional routines (independence), pre-academics, and play and social interactions (playing with toys and playing with others). Our classroom environment is adapted to include visual accommodations in all areas.
My students think and learn a way that is different from students that are developing typically.
The students in our classroom are impacted by the characerisics of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Students in our classroom have delays in each of the learning areas listed above.
My Project
We currently have access to a single classroom iPad, for up to eight students to use during one given activity. We have been piloting a program that teaches language acquisition by combining the use of motor planning with teaching core vocabulary words. The students have been learning to use the system with increased independence and we would love to be able to provide access to the iPad with the LAMP communication app for twice as many students.
Our classroom is using the LAMP Words for Life communication system to teach functional words to our students who are minimally or non-verbal.
We use this form of communication in conjunction with picture exchange to teach students communicate with the world around them.
We are seeing significant growth in student engagement and motivation participate with this app. In order to increase communication skills for multiple children at a quicker rate, it is important to have enough materials for everyone!
