Have you struggled to find just the right word? I have, and so have my 6th graders. This book is a treasure, as it gives students easy access to excellent and interesting alternatives to boring words. My students would benefit greatly from one class set, so everyone would have a copy when writing.
Environmental science and technology is the unifying theme our magnet middle school.
The history, geology, and environmental diversity of the rivers provide a living laboratory for students from grades 6 to 8.
Although our focus is environmental science and technology, Our magnet middle School has a culture of reading, with students completing 25 books or more each school year. Students engage in both reading and writing daily during a double period of language arts. Our writing begins in writer's notebooks which hold the seeds for ideas, strategies, structures, and skills. We practice daily, often using our favorite authors' words as mentor texts, and work to bring our favorite pieces to final published drafts.
My Project
Writing with vivid description, to create that mental movie in our reader's mind is challenging for my sixth graders. Words like nice, good, or went provide little for the reader to picture, so students use a standard thesaurus to select a stronger, more precise word. With 5 copies available in my room, there is often a wait, as simply locating that word takes time. I came across Banish Boring Words in a catalog recently and purchased it for myself as a resource. It quickly became apparent that every student would benefit from this book. Words are listed in categories such as character traits or emotions. However, pages of words to use to describe a character's facial expressions and movement, or specific sensory words for taste, smell, feel, and the like are easy to find. What does this mean for my students? Better word choice, vivid imagery, yes. But more importantly, the quality of their work will improve because they will feel successful and confident as writers, and write more!
