Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an inner city school that has a very diverse group of students with every ethnicity being represented. More than 55% of our school population are English Language Learners. My school welcomes its diverse student population and implements a variety of experiences to reach out to our school community. Some of our more noteworthy events include Literacy Volunteers Program, Family Fun and Learning Nights, and the Spring Community Art Show which showcases the art work of students, parents, staff, and community volunteers. My students come to school eager to learn new things everyday. They work very hard to complete all tasks throughout the day. My students work very hard to make sure they are learning to their utmost potential and try their best everyday. In my room, I have students who speak many different languages with a drive to learn and do their best. Most of my students qualify for free lunch. The thing that amazes me the most about my students is their desire and strive to do their best each and every day. This drive wants me to make sure my students have the proper resources to succeed.
My Project
My students will be using these materials on a daily basis during our literacy station time. The interactive word building materials give my students a fun and hands-on activity to practice their spelling and reading of words. In second grade, these word building and phonics skills are critical for my students development for reading. Not only will these materials, games, and builders help my students be able to find word patterns that will make reading easier, but it will also help increase their confidence when reading and writing.
These materials will help to give my students the greatest gift of all---the ability to read!
Many of my students are able to memorize the letters and their sounds but are unable to apply them in real world reading. These games will help promote students to work in partners, a small group and even independently. Students need to practice and apply skills taught during word work and understand the meaning of words. As words are important to build vocabulary, it is also important for students to understand the meaning of words and how it applies to their learning and future educational success. They will help my students move beyond these hurdles and into the world of reading.
As my classroom does not have enough resources for word work and practicing using words during literacy stations, I will be able to differentiate small groups using a variety of these resources at each students "just right" level. As many of these resources are for different levels of students ability. I can manage students progress by using these resources to teach different skills. For example, if students are struggling with CVC words, I can use the resource "CVC game" and enforce this skill using the game and manipulatives to help students learn.
