Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the best students I could ever ask for. They come to school each day with the desire to learn and succeed. It isn't easy for them, most are learning English as a second language, eat only when they are at school and have missed out on many of the experiences other children their age have had but they don't let that stop them! My 19 students are determined to overcome the odds and be all they can be!
What my students lack in tangible goods, they make up for ten-fold in creativity, perseverance, and heart.
They are clever, hard-working, and considerate. They love to "get their hands dirty" and explore learning rather than listen to me talk. They learn best when they are allowed to discover, apply, and think in depth about topics.
My Project
As children learning English as a second language, my students need extra practice with words that aren't spelled as they sound. These words are often tricky for them to remember how to read and spell.
We are requesting tangible word work experiences that build fine motor skills.
Adding a tactile, physical action to the activity helps the brain remember it better. Offering my students manipulatives, such as snapping cubes, clothespins, and patterns blocks allows them to move pieces into the shapes of the letters. They can strengthen fine motor skills by using materials such as the clothespins and beads. Some materials also offer a different sensory options, such as the play doh, wax sticks, and LEGOs. For other students who need something more straight forward, I can laminate cards that allow them to trace with dry erase markers. Having these multiple approaches goes a long way!
