A typical day in my classroom means working with 25 very diverse learners from differing backgrounds, abilities, and walks of life. All of these different backgrounds result in various reading abilities and levels. However, for each of them, literacy is the building block to becoming successful, lifelong learners. It is my hope that I can provide what they need to be successful and meet each of their needs.
We have the most diverse elementary school in our district and are a Title 1 school with 61% of students on free/reduced price lunch.
Socio-economic levels are drastically different from one student to another. Several of my students struggle to read on grade-level text. However, they all come to school eager to learn and grow. There are no sweeter, loveable second graders than the ones in our room! My classroom is filled with students who range in various reading abilities. It is my number one goal to equip my students with the things they need to be successful readers and writers and hopefully, to fall in love with a good book.
My Project
My students need a fun inviting mobile cart that will house engaging activities for students to practice making words. A Word Work cart on wheels will enable me to set up the station with minimal loss of instructional time.
Students will use hands-on materials to apply the spelling patterns that have been formally taught during our Word Work lessons.
From letter tiles, to play dough students will have the ease of opening a drawer and finding ways to practice building words. Students will also be able to then write the words they make using colored markers, pencils, or crayons so they can see the words in print! This mobile station will also house games they can play such as Banana Grams, Scrabble Junior, and Boggle. Because you see working with words and spelling patterns makes reading work!
Word work is a hands-on time to explore the spellings and/or meanings of words. Word work is vital to my daily instruction! With the help of this mobile station, filled with fun ways to practice what they have learned and to add on to their learning, words move into their long-term memory. Word work helps my learners become better readers, spellers, and writers.
