This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students at my school are an energetic and hardworking group of children. They enjoy coming to school, but school funding cuts over the years have impacted what schools can provide to individual classrooms.
I teach second grade in an urban neighborhood where all the students at school are eligible for free breakfast and free lunch.
Some students live below the poverty line and their families struggle to provide them with basic necessities needed to be successful in school. Despite these obstacles, our school has hard-working students, as well as teachers and staff, who strive to make our school a welcoming and inviting place. In addition, our school is one of the top-performing schools in the city.
My Project
My students will be using the Daily 5 this upcoming school year. The Daily 5 is a framework for structuring the literacy block. This helps students develop lifelong habits of reading, writing, and working independently as they participate in a variety of literacy activities. One of the five activities is focused on working with words.
Students need lots of different materials to keep them engaged during this station.
They will use letter stamps and different color stamp pads to practice spelling new words. The cardstock will be used to make task cards. It is also important that students are actively engaged in the word work station. The containers and rolling cart will allow all the materials to be stored neatly and safely. It will also make the materials easily accessible to wherever students are working. This will allow me to work with small groups of students and enable me to meet all the needs of my students.
