My second-grade students are excited about learning! We enjoy many projects and activities in our self-contained classroom. Our school district is located in rural North Central Iowa. Our community is relatively small, but there is a lot of pride in the local school district. The students in my classroom come from a variety of different backgrounds and home experiences. Many of my students come from low-income families, and they may not have the opportunities or learning experiences that other students normally do. However, all of my students enjoy coming to school and learning new things- especially reading books and learning new math concepts!
My Project
In second grade, much of our day is centered around reading and writing. My second-grade students enjoy learning how to read and write in various genres, including narrative, informative, and persuasive formats. As students become familiar with reading these genres, they are often presented with new vocabulary words. I have had students have to use the glossaries in our reading books to define words, but these can be limited.
My students could use a class set of dictionaries and thesauruses to learn how to look up words and expand their vocabulary.
As well as helping students expand their reading vocabulary, the thesauruses will help students improve their writing, especially when we learn about synonyms and antonyms, and making our writing sound more interesting. Having a set of ten dictionaries and ten thesauruses will make it possible for pairs of students to share and learn from these resources.
