This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are full of life and energy. Our school is part of a low in-come community. Out of my class of 18 students, 16 are African American. They are a creative and thrive on hands-on activities. I am fortunate enough to receive manipulatives for them to use, but we lack the storage to organize them. My students need structure and organization to focus best. Organization is a life skill that my class needs to learn. And the best way to learn is by example.
My Project
Word study and phonics is essential to reading. To help my students become better readers and writers they need to study and learn different spelling patterns. This will increase their ability to decode as they read and spell as they write. The district has provided sorts and phonetic activities, but it's all electronic. These active, creative, tactile students need those activities in their hands to learn. We need cardstock to print the hands on activities for students to use. Once I create, and print those sorts and activities, they need to be stored some where.
Photo cases and greeting card boxes, will provide the students with the storage to keep up with it all.
Children need organization taught and modeled to them. Having storage for all the hands on activities is desperately needed. That way all activities and sorts can be stored and filed together for easy access. The organization is also important because we are more efficient and effective when we are organized.
