I am a first grade teacher in an East Texas public school. I have students of various learning levels, including ESL students. Our district requires that we use a Word Wall in our curriculum. The Word Wall is an area in the classroom which contains high frequency words that we learn each week. As a new word is learned, it is added to the Word Wall. The Word Wall then becomes a work in progress that students use throughout the year, to help them in both reading and writing.
The problem in my classroom has been that it's difficult to put up a workable, useable Word Wall due to the physical restraints of the classroom. A lack of bulletin board space and the classroom's ceiling-to-almost-floor window area has made it challenging to find a Word Wall solution that can be seen by all the students in the classroom.
I would like to use the Word Wall Kit found at Primary Concepts to set up a Word Wall area that will produce more effective results in my classroom. The kit contains the high frequency words that my class must master on easy-to-read tiles. The large, purple 48"x38" pocket chart will give them a focus area which is more easily read than the word cards on the windows that I am currently using.
This kit also comes with Word Wall Work: Mastering High Frequency Words guide which provided daily activities using the Word Wall to develop fluency in reading and writing. This resource will help me maximize the use of my Word Wall.
The Word Tile Organizer that comes with the kit will be a tremendous time saver as it conveniently stores the word tiles that will be used each week.
This Word Wall Kit will benefit all of the students in my classroom of 18-21 children on a daily basis. It will serve as a dynamic reference point for my students that will strongly influence their reading and writing abilities.
