My students need thesauri to be able to make good word choice in their writing, and be able to increase their vocabularies. This has been an area of struggle for them.

My Students

I teach in a 6-12 rural school in mid-Michigan. I am new to this school, but I have never met more helpful and respectful students! Someone is always willing to lend a hand carrying things for a teacher or opening doors. They even participate in service learning projects for our community.

The students at our school are excited about learning!

Yet many students are from low-income households and struggle with buying the necessary tools needed to be successful in class. Our district scores show that reading is an area we need to focus on to assist our students to become College and Career Ready.

My Project

The materials I am requesting are some quality thesauri that are age appropriate for middle school students. As of right now, we do not have any thesauri at all to work with. As students work with words and learn that they can substitute better words for the words they already have in their vocabularies, they will increase their skill in writing.

Exposure to a good thesaurus will enhance my students' vocabularies.

This will also aid in reading comprehension as well as their ability to write more coherent sentences.

When students are able to use larger vocabulary words, they feel smarter and therefore work harder and smarter. They become more successful.
