Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As I get ready for this coming school year (school starts on Aug.29th) I can hardly contain my excitement. Yet, at the same time it can be overwhelming. Looking back at last year, I remember how eager the students were to come to first grade and learn to read. Many students have not had a lot of experiences with literature, except for their one year of kindergarten. As I start to plan for the coming year, I have been trying to come up with fun and exciting ways for them to learn how to read. I am also concerned about students' fluency and their ability to read quickly and smoothly, since it was such a struggle at the end of last year. I have found one thing that I think will help. It is a word family center for our workshop time. The students love to work independently; they like to feel like big kids. This center teaches word families, which will help with their speed, decoding abilities, and recognition of spelling patterns.
