Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
English is a tricky language! There are so many different letter sounds and rules to learn! And of course there are always exceptions to every rule. Imagine trying to learn all of these when English is your second language!
Our school is a Title I school with a very diverse student population.
Our class has students from Liberia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and more! Students who speak English as a second language have a harder time correlating letter sounds and rules. Often they start to blend English rules and sounds with the rules and sounds of their native language. Building a solid phonetic base for them to build off of is important for their success in reading and writing.
My Project
Each day in our class we do word work where we study phonics and apply these skills in reading and writing. While I work with students reading and writing in small groups, the rest of the students are doing independent practice. They may be listening to reading, writing, or doing word work. Right now, our word work center is very boring! The children may use magnetic letters to build and break apart words, but they are not engaged. The games I am requesting will be used everyday for the students to practice the phonics skills they are learning in a meaningful and engaging way. They will be playing tic-tac-toe or memory match with a partner and will not even realize that they are practicing phonics!
For ESOL students, phonics is one of the most challenging, but important skills to learn.
Without a solid foundation of letter sounds and phonic rules, their reading and writing cannot progress. I want to help students reach their full potential by getting them excited and engaged in every aspect of our reading block. With the help of these games, students will be able to practice skills independently and have fun while doing it.
