My Students

Do you remember what is was like to read? All those letters, trying to figure out what sounds they make, and how they go together? My students have not yet figured out how to blend words together.

My kindergarten students attend the lowest socioeconomic school in our district in Oregon.

The majority of them have not attended preschool and have little academic support at home. Over half of them do not speak English at home, many of them come in to school not recognizing any letters, and cannot write their own name. Developmentally, many of them learn best through hands-on activities and objects, so just using a pencil, paper, and paper books does not always work for all of them.

My Project

These blocks will make word building fun! Each day, I break my students into 4 small reading groups, where we get to work on letter sounds, blending sounds together to make words, word families, and reading small books. These word building blocks will be great to have for each reading group and will provide an easy--and fun--way to manipulate the letters and build their own words.

Learning how to build words and read is one of the most important skills a five-year-old can learn--it impacts every single other subject area and without this skill, they will have a hard time succeeding in life.

I want to present every opportunity to my students to learn this, in various different ways, so I can help EVERY single one of my students succeed.
