My students are sweet little humanitarians walking around the school, waiting to be spoon-fed knowledge. They are high poverty level but don't know it. They do not complain and are excited about what the day will bring in the form of cognitive learning. They love a good lesson but I need to continually revamp their learning to make it new and fresh for them. They are a mix of Hispanic, African American, Indian, Asian, and Caucasian population. They are always ready to help out and have a smile on their faces. The students that need their emotional intelligence recognized respond with a stimulating lesson and a safe environment where they feel needed and can be challenged.
This is a special series of books called songtale books. These books contain folk songs that have been passed down from generation to generation. John Feierabend, music clinician and professional music educator, took these songs and collaborated with artists to create this extraordinary collection of picture books.
With these books I have the opportunity to teach my primary students classic folktales in the earthy genre of folk music.
I will be using this set of literature in conjunction with my music standards. These will reinforce and bring the study of the music alive, all while the students are enjoying the gift of authors and illustrators painting a picture for the students' imagination.
These books will bring together the notion that the marriage of music and books can come together to help tell a story. Teachers today have little time. They have to teach smart. When I teach cross-curriculum, the students retain the information that much longer. Research has shown that when you place curriculum in chant and rhyme the retention is heightened. We all need that in public schools!
