Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are in desperate need of some sort of musical and creative outlet in their lives. Most are at a significant disadvantage because of where they live in east Stockton, Ca and have turned to music to help enrich their lives.
Most of my students come from a family that has been through a lot either emotionally or financially.
They have looked to music as a way to express their feelings and develop their social skills not only in meeting and working with classmates but also communicating through music. Our high school is going through a lot of changes not only in school vision but also in improving the lives of our students in and out of the classroom. Our program has doubled in size over the past year because students are so attached to the music making process and the close friends they make in my classroom.
My Project
Since our program has grown significantly, we have run short in our supply of flutes and clarinets. I want my students to play an instrument that they enjoy and can relate with and would love to fulfill some lifelong dreams with their instrument of choice. Even though we have filled our band with instruments thus far, we have a need for 2 more flutes and 2 more clarinets.
For some of my students, music is literally the only reason they come to school.
We have a very, very high dropout rate in our district (30% of seniors drop out). Keeping our students engaged and active in school is our highest priority and nothing is more fun for these students that creating music with their friends.
