My students need social and emotional learning because emotional regulation is key to learning success. Aristotle stated, “Educating the mind and not the heart is not education at all." The Worry Woo Program does just that!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are special because they have been removed from a traditional setting and placed in a behavioral school where educators like myself (family therapist) work with them to learn strategies. We also work with families!
Social and emotional learning is critical to developing motivation and curiosity in students!
Many of my students suffer from ACES - Adverse Childhood Experiences, stressful life events, and trauma. Our school is a behavior center which focuses on social and emotional learning in order to best serve our students and their families with evidence-based approaches!
My Project
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and to make responsible decisions.
Findings across all studies found a broad range of benefits for students:
• 23% improvement in social and emotional skills
• 10% decrease in emotional distress
• 9% improvement in attitudes about self, others, and school
• 9% decrease in conduct problems
• 9% improvement in school and classroom behavior
• 11 % improvement in achievement test scores

The Worry Woo Collection personifies emotions such as loneliness, frustration, and insecurity into lovable characters that allow for students to articulate these feelings as they relate. The books (which I have purchased many already, along with the corresponding stuffed animals) have engaged my students and always leave them with a positive lesson. The workbooks requested will add to the depth at which they explore their emotions and the Program Book will allow me to train teachers to adopt emotional intelligence in the classroom. Additionally, the parent book provides ideas to aid in family-focused therapy, while the additional books will aid in helping younger children with frustration and worries. I work with students ages K-6 primarily, and these books are critical in reaching the hearts of all of my students!
