We have 550 amazing students in grades Pre-K to 5th grade at our school. We are a culturally diverse school and approximately half of our students qualify to receive free or reduced-price meals. Our students are creative, smart, hard-working, and love to read! As the school librarian, my goal is to introduce our students to many different topics through literature, and I strive to offer books and activities that are engaging and educational.
I love introducing students to a wide variety of experiences that tie into what the kids are reading and learning about, and I don't want that to end!
Therefore I am requesting these activities to coordinate with my reading lessons to reinforce their learning through fun, hands-on activities!
My Project
I am requesting these community-related learning materials so that I can connect what my students are reading and learning about to real-life experiences in their community. My younger students are learning about being a community and what that word means and what their role is in making their community an even better place to live. As we are reading about the different roles in the community, I want to offer the kids hands-on learning activities that let the students act out what they are reading about, while working together in small groups, just like they would in the community. These materials will offer students a real-world connection to our reading and reading lessons, with the amazing extra benefit of working together and experiencing what it takes to build a solid community firsthand!
