With an up-to-the-minute forecast available at the click of a button, it's easy to tell what the weather is going to be like tomorrow. But could you explain how the local weather forecaster came up with those numbers? Or how it can be sunny and clear one minute and cloudy and cold moments later?
I work with 26 enthusiastic fourth graders in a public school in Georgia.
These students are intensely curious, and they seem to do best when they have hands-on materials that they can use to immerse themselves in a subject. They come from a variety of socio-economic and racial backgrounds and have diverse experiences at home. Despite their many differences, however, they work well together and build on each other's enthusiasm when we can share in experiences at school.
My Project
I'm requesting weather monitoring equipment because I want my students to continue to ask the questions "why?" and "how?" and to understand that there's more that goes into weather than just a number on a TV or computer screen. Giving my students experience with weather equipment will allow them to become junior meteorologists who can make their own weather forecasts and explain complex weather phenomena. It will enable us to learn complicated science content in a real world context while also connecting to data collection learning in math.
Your contribution to this project will impact my class both this year and in years to come because the materials I've requested are reusable.
As weather patterns become more complicated and dramatic, I'm excited about the deep learning that can take place among my students as they learn how and why weather changes and how we can anticipate those changes. I know my students will love becoming junior meteorologists, but the quality of that experience relies on access to this equipment.
